낙화(Falling of Blossoms) / 2023 / Acrylic on canvas / 152x183cm
많이 사랑했던 사람과의 마음을 정리하기 위해 시작한 작품이다. 서로가 끝이 얼마 남지 않았음을 직감했던 떄에 이형기 시인의 "낙회"의 한 구절인 "떠나야 할 때가 언제인지를 알고 떠나는 이의 뒷모습은 얼마나 아름다운가."에 큰 영감을 받았다. 첫 번째 레이어의 거친 붉은 물감은 캔버스 전체에 도포되어 있어 있으며, 그와의 사랑, 추억, 행복 그리고 기억들을 의미한다. 그 위 두번 째 레이어이자 캔버스 상단에 위치한 기하학적인 붓의 반복은 이성적으로 끝이라는 것을 알지만 그것을 어떻게든 이어나가보려는 나의 노력 또한 그의 노력의 형상화이다. 하지만 그 노력은 결국 캔버스를 가득 채우지 못하고 끝이 나버렸다. 마지막이자 가장 겉의 레이어의 흰 물감의 흩뿌려짐은 그와의 사랑의 끝맺음을 인정하며 사랑하기 이전의 모습으로 다시 되돌아가 새로운 시작을 준비하려는 맘을 담았다. 흰색의 물감을 사용해 캔버스의 가장 처음 그대로의 색감인 백색이 다시금 캔버스를 채울 때가 되서야 나는 또 다른 사랑을 할 준비가 되지 않을까?
I started to paint this work after I decided to finish my relationship my beloved one. We both knew that the end has come near. At the time, I read the poem by Lee Hyung Ki, "The Falling of Blossoms". Especially I was inspired by the phrase, "How beautiful of one's back who clearly knows when to leave". The first and most inner layer, red pigment is spread all over the canvas which depicts the time, love, emotions and memories with her. The second layer which is located on the upper side of the canvas meaning the urge and effort we both put in to maintain the relationship even we both know it is near the end. This geometric shape did not manage to fill the whole canvas and manifested the end at almost half, just like the relationship. The last and most outer layer is filled with white pigments all over the canvas. It means that now I do acknowledge the end and trying hard to go back to the point when I did not love her. Using white pigment also means the decision to restroe the original color of the canvas. Probably before my emotion is restored with white pigment, it would be tough for me to start another love.
